There are three churches in the small village of Wengen, the Evangelisch Reformierte Kirche, the Roman Catholic Church and St Bernard’s English Church. Unusually, in modern times, they are all supported well, not least of course today.
There is also one cathedral, the magnificent range of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. On the face of the Jungfrau, etched into the mountain seemingly, is the number “121”.
Which in the book of Psalms is a song of ascent – nothing to do with the mountains at all – but it is used often in memory of those who climb.
Beneath the Jungfrau, the weather ran its common course of snow, cloud and the occasional burst of sun, which allowed 10,270 vertical metres in 22 lift rides.
The inscription above the stained glass window in the English church is also from Psalm 121.
