Today the mountain was quiet, close to deserted. The 9.45am cable car took eighteen people to Mannlichen, where we found winter had returned. It hadn’t seemed likely in the village, but up on the hill there was a distinct chill in the air. The clouds swirled but the sun shone through. At several times during the day, there was brilliant sunshine and heavy snow fall at the same time, a weather system which can be recommended without hesitation.

It was quieter still in the afternoon, which seemed impossible given the empty pistes of the morning. I enjoyed a solitary run to Innerwengen. A day without anything resembling a queue brought 10,382 vertical metres in 23 lift rides and 54 kilometres travelled.
