Gold for Wengen

At the St. Moritz Winter Olympics in 1948, Karl Molitor represented Switzerland.  This legendary skier and winner of the Lauberhorn for many years was a son of Wengen.

Early today (very early in Switzerland) another local skier, Ryan Regez, following in Molitor’s footsteps, managed one step further and won the gold medal in skicross at the Beijing Olympics.  It is safe to say that the village is pleased.  This small place doesn’t find that many Olympians, but when they come along, they seem to make the grade.

                                              Yesterday’s golden sunset

On the mountain, the last couple of days have been indifferent at best.  The wind has blown and lifts have closed; it has rained, snowed and the sun has shone intermittently, with a golden end to the day yesterday.  This afternoon was not just warm, but hot.

Two poorish days have brought 10,744 vertical metres in 30 lift rides and 73 kilometres travelled.
